FAQs

How do I get to Burghley House?

By train: take East Midlands Railway to Stamford (change at Peterborough, which is ~50 mins from London King's Cross on LNER). From Stamford station it's about a 20-minute walk or a short taxi into the Park. By car: Burghley is just off the B1443 near Stamford — postcode PE9 3JY for sat nav. Car parking is on-site but can fill up fast on Cross Country Day, so arrive early!

Is there parking on site?

Yes, there's extensive on-site parking across the estate — it's included in your ticket or available to purchase. Cross Country Saturday is the busiest day of the week, so aim to arrive before 9am if you want to be settled before the first horse goes. Campers and those with weekend passes can use dedicated camping car parks.

What's the best place to watch the cross country?

The Lake fence is the classic Burghley view — horses either fly it or have a splash, and the atmosphere is incredible. The Lion Bridge complex and the Trout Hatchery are also brilliant spots. The Grandstand gives you a reserved seat near the finish, which is great for the final hour when scores are tight. Walk the course early and claim your spot!

What should I wear and bring?

Burghley is an outdoor country estate — smart-casual with very practical footwear. Wellies or sturdy walking boots are strongly recommended; the Park can be muddy even in September. Layers are wise — it can be warm in the sun but breezy by the Lake. Bring a picnic, binoculars, a course map (available at the entrance), and a fully charged phone for photos.

Are dogs allowed?

Yes! Well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome throughout the Park. Just be mindful around the horses and crowds near fences. Water bowls are usually provided at various points around the course.

What time does Cross Country Day start and finish?

Gates typically open around 8am. The cross country starts in the morning (usually around 10:30–11am) and the final horse is normally home by mid-afternoon. Allow time to explore the shopping village and trade stands — it's worth a wander after the horses are done!
