FAQs

How do I get to Burghley House?

The easiest route is by train to Peterborough (direct from London King's Cross in about 50 minutes), then a connecting train to Stamford — only about 10 minutes. From Stamford station it's a pleasant 15-minute walk through the town to Burghley House. By car, Burghley is just off the A1 near Stamford; follow the brown event signs. There is on-site parking available, charged separately.

Is there parking on site?

Yes — Burghley has large car parks on the estate, signposted from the A1. Parking is charged separately (usually around £10–£12 per day). Arriving early on the dressage days is recommended as the car parks fill up by mid-morning, especially on Friday.

What is the dressage format at Burghley?

Dressage is the first phase of the four-star eventing competition. Each horse and rider combination performs their individual test in the main arena, earning scores that set the leaderboard before cross-country. Thursday and Friday cover all competitors — the top names usually ride on Friday afternoon, so Friday is the prime day to watch the best combinations.

Do I need a Grandstand ticket or is General Admission fine?

General admission gives you access to the arena viewing areas, trade stands, and the wider grounds — perfectly enjoyable. The Grandstand offers reserved seating with an elevated view directly over the dressage arena, which is worth it if you want to see every movement clearly. Premier Grandstand includes a hospitality element. For a first visit, General Admission is great value; regulars often upgrade to Grandstand for the dressage days.

Are there food and drink options on site?

Absolutely — Burghley has a fantastic Trade Stands & Shopping Village with a huge range of food stalls, restaurants, and caterers. Everything from local produce and picnic food to sit-down lunches. There's also a well-stocked champagne bar and Pimm's tent if you fancy making a proper afternoon of it. Feel free to bring your own picnic too.

Is the event suitable for families and children?

Very much so. Burghley is a brilliant family day out — children under 18 are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. There's plenty of space to wander, the horses are stunning to see up close in the warm-up areas, and the trade stands keep everyone entertained between sessions.
