FAQs

How do I get to the Isle of Wight for the festival?

The easiest way is by ferry! Red Funnel runs from Southampton to East Cowes, and Wightlink sails from Portsmouth to Fishbourne — both take around an hour. Book your ferry in advance for an August weekend, it gets busy. From either port it's roughly a 20–30 minute drive to Newchurch.

Is there parking at the venue?

Yes, there is on-site parking at the festival site near The Fighting Cocks Crossroads. It's a rural field site so expect a short walk from the car park. Arrive early on Saturday especially — it fills up fast. Coaches and shuttle buses also run from Newport and Ryde on festival days.

What's actually there — is it just garlic?

Far from it! There are over 200 stalls selling garlic-infused food and drink (garlic bread, garlic ice cream, garlic beer — yes, really), craft traders, live music across two stages, cookery demos, a Garlic Queen competition, fairground rides, and loads of family activities. It's a proper festival.

Is it suitable for kids and families?

Absolutely — the Garlic Festival is very family-friendly. There are children's fairground rides, entertainment, and plenty of food to try. Under-5s typically go free. Check the official website for the most current age policy.

What should I wear?

It's a muddy Isle of Wight field in August — so sun cream AND wellies is genuinely the right answer. British summer can go either way. Dress in layers, bring a waterproof just in case, and wear shoes you don't mind getting grassy.

When do the gates open?

Gates typically open at 10am both days, with the festival running until around 6–7pm. The live music stages tend to peak in the afternoon. Check the official programme for exact timings closer to the event.
