FAQs

How do I get to York Racecourse?

York station is on the East Coast Main Line — direct LNER trains from London Kings Cross take about 1h 50m, and TransPennine runs from Manchester and Leeds. From the station it's a 25-minute walk across the Knavesmire, or hop on the racecourse shuttle bus which runs on all racedays. Taxis queue outside the station too.

Is there parking at the racecourse?

Yes — there's large on-site parking on the Knavesmire. Pre-book online through York Racecourse as it sells out early for Ebor Day. Allow extra time on the day; traffic on the A64 and Tadcaster Road can be heavy. Park & Ride from the city outskirts is a stress-free alternative.

What's the dress code?

County Stand and hospitality areas: smart dress required. Men in jacket and tie or lounge suit; ladies in smart dress or trouser suit. Ebor Lawn and Tattersalls: smart casual — think smart jeans and a blazer at a minimum. Fancy hats are very much encouraged on Ebor Day, even in general admission!

What time do the gates open?

Gates typically open around 11:00am on Ebor Day with first race around 1:30pm and last race around 5:15pm. Check the official York Racecourse racecard for the 2026 schedule once published, as times can shift slightly.

What are the best pubs near the racecourse?

The Knavesmire is well served — The Fox Inn on Tadcaster Road and The Nag's Head in the city centre are popular pre-race spots. If you're arriving by train, Brew York Tap (right in the station) and the Pivni bar on Patrick Pool are excellent. Many racegoers grab a drink in town first, then walk across the Knavesmire to the course — it's a lovely summer stroll.

What is the Ebor Handicap?

The Sky Bet Ebor is the richest flat handicap in Britain, run over 1 mile 6 furlongs. It's been run at York since 1843 and typically attracts a huge field of 20+ runners. Previous winners include Estimate (owned by The King), Big Orange, and Heartbreak City. It's the centrepiece of the whole festival — one of those races where absolutely anything can happen.
