FAQs

What's the dress code for Ladies Day?

Smart dress is encouraged across all enclosures — this is Ladies Day after all! County Stand requires formal or smart attire; jeans and trainers are not permitted. There's a best-dressed competition with prizes, so this is the day to go all out. Fascinators, statement hats, and heels all very welcome.

How do I get to York Racecourse?

York station is brilliantly connected — direct LNER trains from London King's Cross in under 2 hours, and easy connections from Leeds and Manchester. From the station it's about a 25-minute walk across the Knavesmire, or grab a taxi for around £6–8. There are also race-day bus services. Driving is possible but parking fills up — book in advance on the York Racecourse website.

Where's the best place to watch the racing?

County Stand gives you the grandstand view and trackside buzz — brilliant for the Yorkshire Oaks finish. Tattersalls is the classic spot, great atmosphere and close to the parade ring. Knavesmire Enclosure is the more relaxed, family-friendly end. Wherever you are, the Knavesmire gives you a stunning backdrop.

What time do gates open?

Gates typically open around 11:00–11:30am, with the first race at approximately 1:50pm. The Yorkshire Oaks is usually the feature race in the afternoon — check the official York Racecourse racecard for the exact schedule as the 2026 card is confirmed closer to the date.

Are there good pubs nearby?

York is absolutely brilliant for pre-race drinks. The Olde Starre Inne on Stonegate is a York institution. The Swan on Bishopsgate is popular on race days. If you're walking from the station, The Falcon on Micklegate is a great stop-off. The city centre is only 20 minutes from the racecourse so you have plenty of options.

Can I bring children?

Yes — under-18s go free in the Knavesmire Enclosure when accompanied by a paying adult, making it a brilliant family day out. There are usually kids' activities and entertainment on festival days.
